Summertime Longies

May 23, 2011

Last fall, Rebecca of Bending Birches and I traded knitted winter hats for our boys.  It was so much fun we decided to trade again, this time for summer items.

Rebecca needlefelted some beautiful summer fruits and veggies for imaginative play with O’s wooden kitchen, and I knitted these summer-length longies for W.

I insist on calling them “summer length longies” though I’ll admit it is a bit fussy and the term “shorties” would probably do.  The thing is, “shorties” kind of implies (to me) an above the knee-length.  These longies are more of a board-shorts length with an inseam of 6 inches.  So, surely you can see how a careful choice of words is oh-so-important here.  *wink*

I tried a new pattern this time and very much enjoyed it.  The pattern is extensive with a lot of options, yet straight forward with a rather simple construction.

Please do tell, what is your favorite longies pattern?

I love the colors you chose! I’ll have to look at your notes for the yarn, it’s beautiful!

I use the waistband from Kanoko longies (on Ravelry) and do the rest by measurement with a kitchener stitch in the crotch. I’ve never had a need for extra fancy stuff with my boys – all our longies fit their cloth diapered bums wonderfully. (:

I love the Picky Pants pattern. Expensive, perhaps, but really the only pattern one could ever need. I love the board shorts length. If I have the pleasure of ever knitting soakers for a boy, I am totally stealing that from you! :)

Picky Pants is on my to try list. After I got this one I kind of wished I’d gotten that one instead as it seems to have a wider leg. No matter, I’ll modify away!
Maybe baby currently in utero is a boy? ;)

Every baby we say, “maybe this one will be a boy”, but we are pretty good at making girls, so…. :) We’ll see. As much as I would love to have another boy, I really don’t care. These girls are so much fun, and my big boy is 8 years older than the new baby, so it isn’t like they would be playmates anyway…
