Review & Give-Away: Bella Materna

August 31, 2010

Today is the last day of National Breastfeeding Month.  I thought it appropriate to celebrate nursing, as well as my successful 13 months, with a truly lovely review & give-away from Bella Materna.

Nursing a baby can be challenging enough.  Finding a nursing bra you love should not contribute to that challenge!  While I was pregnant and preparing to nurse my baby, I did what many first time mamas probably do.  I bought a couple of mid-range bras just a cup size larger than what I was currently wearing.  HA!  Mamas, here’s the truth:  I gained one cup size while pregnant, and then two more while nursing.  All the while, my band size remained the same.  Oh my my, indeed!  I did eventually find a bra under a popular brand name that was comfortable, but oh dear was it ever ugly (not to mention massive).

One night during a desperate internet search, I stumbled on Bella Materna.  *sigh*  The website is gorgeous, the lingerie is gorgeous, the customer service is fantastic…  I was smitten, I tell you!  Absolutely smitten!  When Bella Materna agreed to participate in a review and give-away, I could not have been more pleased!

I selected the Lace Trim Seamless Cup in “plum” to review.  I could see from their website that Bella Materna nursing bras are pretty, but I wasn’t prepared for the reality of it.  The first time I put this bra on, I was beside myself.  From then on, I only wore my ugly “granny bra” for sleeping!  Yes, that means unless this lovely little number was in the wash, I was wearing it.  Every day.

The fact that I did wear my Bella Materna nursing bra nearly every day for the next several months is a testament not only to its beauty but its comfort and practicality as well.  My old bra was comfortable but it provided so much coverage that it could not be worn with many of my shirts.  The Bella Materna nursing bra provided me with enough support while still remaining trim.  The silky soft Oeko-Tex certified fabric accommodated changing cup size throughout the day with ease.  The patented one-handed nursing clips were a life saver while using my double electric pump and the flexi underwires never once poked me!

Now for the real confession:  I love this nursing bra so much I continued to wear it for probably two weeks post weaning!  ;-)

Would you like to have a Bella Materna nursing bra of your very own?  (Yes! Yes, you would!)  The generous folks at Bella Materna are kindly offering one lucky Oh Baby O reader a Lace Trim Seamless Cup nursing bra of your very own!  (I suggest trying hard for this one!  It really is amazing!)

Oh boy am I excited about this give-away! I like the lace trim seemless cup nursing bra especailly since it can flex and shrink with you.

That French Lace Camisole is to die for! :)
Nursing tip, eh? Something I wasn’t prepared for was how bad it hurts for the first week or two. What with the uterine cramps and baby learning curve and breasts growing into watermelons – nursing doesn’t start out the beautiful, bonding experience that you dream of during pregnancy. So, my tip is keep going. So many women give up when it is “too hard” or “hurts to much”, but it really does get better. Keep going!
I am glad that I had put off subscribing to your blog, so now it can count for something! :)

I am five months in on this journey and have yet to find a nursing bra that I really like. So this would definitely be a timely prize to win! I think I like the Smooth Cup Nursing Bra.

OH, how I would love to win this one!! If I don’t, I may have to invest in one of my own. I stuck with my current bra, because they’re so darn expensive, and while it’s functional… it’s really industrial. I look lumpy and it’s hard to hide. Can I have two favorites?? I love the lace trim seamless cup one that you selected, but I also love the sexy t-shirt bra.

My best tip for nursing success (I’ve only had one baby, and I hear nursing is easier the second time around): if you can, go shirtless/bra-less (I know that kind of goes against this giveaway item:) for a week or so around the house to “air out” and help sore/cracked/exhausted nipples heal faster. That HAD to be the best thing I ever did. Better than cream, Soothies, anything. But that’s just me. Our family lives far away, so we didn’t have visitors for the first week. I have 2 more :) See if you can find a hospital where the nurses are also lactation specialists (ours were and it was a tremendous help) and finally, just hang in there and don’t quit for the first week because it WILL get better. I sat up the first two nights and cried while I nursed I was so overwhelmed because nobody prepared me!

Thanks for so many tips! …and btw I cried for weeks! ;-)

Maybe no one will find them helpful, but they worked for me… and at least maybe some momma will know she isn’t alone! I’m glad it wasn’t just me too ;)

The French Lacelet bralet is beautiful! Best tip for nursing success…this may sound odd, but if I ever get a breast infection (I’ve been nursing two for two and a half years, so I’ve had a few), I read somewhere to drink vinegar with the “mother” in it. I have tried this, and it works without a hitch!

Oh, this is great! I’m expecting my first baby in December and had no clue what to do about bras, especially since prior to pregnancy I only ever wore sports bras or sleeping bras (the whole “cup size” thing has been a learning experience). My favorite on their site is the nursing sports bra, in 36C/D.

Nursing tip- stick with it. The first 6 weeks were SO SO SO hard and I had to keep reminding myself to stick with it and then, just like everyone promised, it did become easier. Now, at 4 1/2 months old my baby is a nursing pro and so am I! So worth it!

    A nursing tip…

Having water available when you nurse – I always forgot and had to have my hubby get it!

Being calm – it isn’t so bad!

Relaxing while baby eats – it’s the one chance you get to sit and hold baby and just SIT…
