Thoughts on Toys

May 20, 2010

As part of our mindful parenting philosophy, toys are one thing we are pretty picky about.  We like Baby O to have simple toys that inspire imagination and encourage interaction rather than overstimulate.  Soft cotton toys and wood toys with water based paints, if any paint at all, are our preference.  At this point, Baby O still puts things in his mouth, especially his toys.  We like to know his playthings aren’t going to harm him!

These stacking/nesting cups are Baby O’s only plastic toy.  The rest are natural materials (wood, wool, cotton).  According to the package, the cups are free of lead, phthalates, and BPA.  They’re also one of the best $5 investments we’ve made since becoming parents!

What has been one of your surprise best investments?  Do you have a parenting philosophy in regards to toys?

I know what you mean – Scout had a little set of stacking toys – they were meant for the tub but he played with them everywhere…they were the best!

O’s always end up in the tub too!
I find that toys marketed as “tub toys” are things that would just grow mold too easily. Definitely not something we want a baby putting in his mouth!

I would love for DD to have only natural toys…however anyone and everyone who has ever bought her a gift, gives plastic~ Kudos to you for sticking to natural!
DD’s wood toys (that I have purchased) are by far my favorites of hers!
