Review & Give-Away: Hotslings Classic

January 25, 2010

Shall I tell you again how much we adore babywearing?  How about this?  If I could, if I had any sort of real authority on the matter, I would tour the countryside, baby snuggly in tow and give informational talks and demonstrations to mamas and papas everywhere on the benefits of keeping your little ones close.  Maybe that’s a bit much (maybe not), but you get the idea, right?

Some of our favorite babywearing benefits include:

  • Baby stays close when you are out and about.  We’ve put Baby O in his stroller a total of one time while out shopping.  I felt so very strange having him that far from my body while in an environment unfamiliar to him.  If  Baby O is in a sling while we’re out, we both feel more secure.  He likes the security of being close to mama (or papa!) while he’s experiencing a new environment, and I like the comfort of knowing I can quickly meet his needs.  Plus, it’s easier to maneuver a baby in a sling than a baby in a stroller.  Also, strangers are less likely to try to touch the hands and face of a baby that is so close to your body.
  • Some folks say, babies that are kept close cry less.  This is definitely true in our experience!  Baby O hardly cries at all.  Most of the time, he is a very happy boy.  I credit a lot of this to keeping him close and consistently being quickly attentive to his needs.  We also co-sleep (Co-sleep meaning his crib is in our room.  We do not bed-share), but that’s another post.
  • Ease of nursing (bottle or breast)  I actually learned recently that our local WIC program had been giving slings to it’s breastfeeding mothers to help encourage them.  Neat, hu?
  • It’s fun.  I enjoy trying new ways of wearing as Baby O gets older and his preferences change.

We’ve been using a sized Hotslings Classic pouch style baby sling for a few months now and I have to say it is thus far the easiest, most user-friendly sling we have tried.  I use this sling most when I think Baby O will be in and out of the sling often.  The sling itself is simply a fitted tube, no wrapping, tying, or adjusting, very easy to get baby in and out.  Since there is no adjusting a sized sling, fit is very important for both safety and comfort.  You can find fit and sizing information for Hotslings here.  If you have any questions about the fit, be sure to contact costumer service for help.  My measurements spanned three of the Hotslings sizes, so I went with the size in the middle of the three and our pouch fits like a glove (or a well-fitted sling)!

Baby O has never been a fan of the cradle carry, so when we first got our Hotsling pouch, we used the front carry.  Now that he is a bit bigger, we use the hip carry and he loves it.  One feature I especially like about the Hotslings pouch is the padded rail.  The padding goes up under Baby O’s knees when in a hip carry, keeping him nice and comfortable.  :)

The only downside to a sized sling is that my husband and I cannot share it.  If you would like a pouch style sling that can be shared, Hotslings now has an adjustable pouch, the AP.  We will be hosting a review and give-away for the AP soon, so *stay tuned*!

I always try new carriers at home for awhile before taking them in the world, just to be sure I fully understand how to use it safely and comfortably.  Please be sure to review all corresponding use and safety instructions completely before using this or any other baby carrier!

If you are interested in learning more about babywearing, please feel free to check out the links on my Resources page!

Our Hotslings pouch is the one featured above, the Reversible Urban Tribe.  Pretty, right?

I learned that this sling would be easier to use than my current carrier.

There are no fasteners or hardware to worry about and the streamlined design is geared toward the comfort of both the parent and the baby.

I really need to win this ;-)

Watched the HotSling instructional videos(folding and cradle carry since my baby will be too small for any other carry), which was kind of cool to see how they really work, instead of guessing. Makes me really want one now!
