Product Recalls

January 21, 2010

While I was pregnant with Baby O, I did a lot of product research.  Twice, I accidentally stumbled upon items we had waiting for our unborn baby, given to us by well-meaning family members, that had been recalled!  Luckily, we haven’t had any product recalls with anything we’ve actually used, but I’m always on the lookout!

When Baby O is done using something or outgrows it, we usually try to find a friend or family member that can use the item (unless it’s something we save for Baby #2).  If we don’t know anyone that can use what we have, we take it to the local consignment shop.  That’s how we found out about the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.  Our local children’s consignment shop checks all the items they sell on the CPSC website before adding it to their inventory.  Good to know!

The CPSC also has a mailing list.  If you sign up, you receive regular emails alerting you of the latest product recalls on all kinds of products, including those for babies and children.  I still research a lot and remove anything from our home that I feel might pose a safety risk, and getting regular emails from CPSC does help quite a bit.

You can sign up for the CPSC mailing list on their website here.
