Review & Give-Away: Crunchy Clean

October 28, 2009

I first heard of Crunchy Clean detergent about a year ago (that long ago already!?) while I was pregnant and scouring the internet for all things cloth and cloth diaper related.  I spent a lot of time on community forums getting opinions from other mamas on which detergents work best for them.  One name I found to be very popular among the natural parenting crowd is Crunchy Clean.  I hadn’t had a chance to give Crunchy Clean a real try until about a month ago.  Now, I wish I had done so much sooner!

We’ve been using Crunchy Clean on all of our laundry for a couple of weeks now and couldn’t be more pleased.  The scents are probably the only thing I miss about conventional laundry detergents.  Until now, I thought that only unscented detergents would be safe for our cloth diapers.  Turns out I was wrong!  We’ve been using Crunchy Clean’s Diaper Detergent in the Baby Bee scent on our cloth diapers with wonderful results!  Our diapers smell great (exactly how you think Baby Bee would smell, light, like golden honey) and we haven’t had any leaks whatsoever!  I don’t know how she does it, but I feel like Ashley, the creator of Crunchy Clean, has given our family everything we’re looking for in a detergent.  It works great, smells good, is “crunchy” (green), and is very compatible with hard water.  I’ve also noticed that if I toss our down comforter in the dryer after a load of Crunchy Clean laundry, it does a great job freshening the comforter!

We also tried the Everyday Detergent in Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey and Orange Grapefruit, as well as Sprinkles! Powder in Orange Grapefruit.  The Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey smells homey, like cookies.  Mmm.  The Orange Grapefruit smells lively, like citrus (imagine that).  My husband is a big fan of the Orange Grapefruit, while I prefer the Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey.  We both enjoy the Baby Bee.  I tested the Everyday Detergent on our (adult) sheets and (adult) towels only.  We use the Diaper Detergent on all of our clothing, diapers, and Baby O’s sheets/towels.  As far as I can tell, both detergents are equally effective for getting things clean.  I think for future purchases, we will purchase solely the Diaper Detergent so that we can use one detergent  for all of our laundry.

The Sprinkles! Powder is definitely a nice addition to our changing station.  We wash our cloth every other day regardless of how many diapers we have left, so things don’t ever get too smelly in our nursery.  That said, it’s still nice to have a pleasant smell greet you when you enter the room.  Sprinkles! Powder is completely compatible with Crunchy Clean Diaper Detergent.  Just sprinkle a bit in your diaper pail and when it’s laundry day, wash as usual.  Some other uses for Sprinkles! Powder include:  carpets, trash cans, and litter boxes.

One more thing, let it be known throughout the land that I am a total sucker for great packaging!  Crunchy Clean does not disappoint!  Detergents are shipped in a recyclable, resealable paper bag with the adorable Crunchy Clean logo on the front and directions for use on the back.

Just a note:  Crunchy Clean also offers all of their detergents in an unscented option for those of you that are especially sensitive or those of you that just happen to like your detergent unscented!

Now the problem:  How to convince B that we need both Crunchy Clean and Charlie’s Soap?

Ashley Brummer is a “speech therapist turned chemist”.  She and her husband began making Crunchy Clean Everyday Detergent while Ashley was still in grad school in an effort to save money and be green. Crunchy Clean Diaper Detergent was added after the birth of their daughter. The most recent addition to the Crunchy Clean line is a diaper pail deodorizer aptly named Sprinkles!
